Dr Kevin Southern completed his PhD in 1998, examining gene transfer as a therapy for CF and then consolidated his research training with a MRC Fellowship (University of North Carolina).  Currently Reader at the University of Liverpool, Editor for the CF and Genetics Disorders Cochrane Review Group and Chair, European newborn screening (NBS) Working Group.  Dr Southern was chair of the implementation group that established the national UK NBS programme.  The UK programme has been running since 2007, has screened over 3 million babies and has identified CF in over 1000.  Dr Southern continues to be actively involved in the UK programme as Chair of the NBS Board and is an honorary member of the US CFF Quality Improvement Consortium for NBS.  He has a long-standing interest in diagnostic issues, was a founding member of the ECFS Diagnostic Network and is the Lead on the ECFS group developing a standard operating procedure for sweat testing. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles on CF, diagnostic issues and newborn screening.
